How Do I Read My DNA Paternity Test Results?

How to Read Your Results #

In your test report, turn to Page 2. You will see a chart displaying the DNA profiles for each person tested. The data displayed in the DNA profile chart may look something like this:

LocusPI (Paternity Index)ChildAlleged Father
D8S11791.5113,1413
D21S112.8830,32.230,32.2

At the bottom of the table, you will see a “Combined Paternity Index, and Probability of Paternity”. These are the values you want to focus on.

Combined Paternity Index #

The Combined Paternity Index (CPI) is found by multiplying the individual paternity index numbers together. This number helps show how strong the DNA evidence is. It tells us how many times more likely the tested man is the biological father compared to a random man from the general population.

Probability of Paternity #

The probability of paternity is based on the CPI and is usually considered the final result of a paternity test. If the CPI is 0, the probability of paternity is 0%. If the CPI is higher than 1000, the probability is greater than 99.99%.

What Does This Mean? #

A DNA paternity test report will show one of two possible results:

  • If the tested man is NOT the biological father, the report will say:
    PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 0%
  • If the tested man IS the biological father, the report will say:
    PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: >99.99%
