How Do I Read My DNA Sibling Test Results Report?

On your Sibling DNA Test report, you will find a chart displaying the DNA profiles for each person tested. The DNA profile chart may look something like this:

DNA LocusSibling 1Sibling 2Sibling Index
D8S117913,14141.32
D21S1128,3028,304.25

At the bottom of the table, you will see a Combined Sibling Index.

The Combined Sibling Index is calculated by multiplying the the sibling index values for each DNA locus, and it is the final result of a DNA Sibling Test. The sibling index represents how many times more likely it is that the tested individuals are full-/half-siblings (for a FULL sibling test) or half-siblings rather than not related (for a HALF sibling test).

Sibling IndexExplanation
10The individuals are 10x more likely to be true siblings than not siblings.
100The individuals are 100x more likely to be true siblings than not siblings.
0.01The individuals are 100x more likely not to be true siblings than siblings (1/0.01 = 100).

In general, a larger sibling index (>1.0) corresponds to a higher likelihood of relationship. The higher that the index is above 1.0, the higher the likelihood that the two individuals are related as siblings.

Likewise, a smaller sibling index (<1.0) corresponds to a lower likelihood of relationship. The lower that the index is below 1.0, the lower the likelihood that the two individuals are related as siblings.

Recommended Interpretation of the Combined Sibling Index

Sibling IndexInterpretation
Greater than 10The genetic evidence is supportive of relationship.
0.1 to 10The genetic evidence is inconclusive of relationship.
Less than 0.1The genetic evidence is not supportive of relationship.
