Returning DNA Samples to the Lab

2 min read

Returning your DNA samples to the laboratory accurately and promptly ensures reliable test results. If you’ve chosen to collect your samples, follow these steps to prepare and send them:

1. Sample Collection:

  • Materials Needed: Use clean cotton swabs (Q-tip style) or buccal swabs provided in your test kit.
  • Collection Process:
    • Gently rub two swabs inside your cheek, against the gums, and behind your lips for about 15 seconds.
    • Repeat this process with the other two swabs on the other cheek.
    • Perform this for each individual being tested, totaling four swabs per person.
  • Drying the Swabs: Allow the swabs to air dry completely, which may take up to an hour. This prevents moisture from affecting the sample integrity during transit.

2. Packaging the Samples:

  • Envelope Preparation:
    • Place each dried swab into a separate paper envelope.
    • Clearly write the following information on each envelope:
      • Journey Genetic Testing case number
      • Full name of the individual
      • Date of birth
      • Race
      • Relationship to other participants (e.g., alleged father, child)
  • Important Note: Avoid using plastic bags for storing DNA samples, as moisture can degrade the sample quality. Always use paper envelopes for storage.

3. Shipping the Samples:

  • Return Envelope:
    • If you received a pre-addressed return label and envelope with your kit, place the sealed paper envelopes inside it.
    • Ensure the envelope is securely sealed and affix sufficient postage (if sending samples from outside of the USA)
  • Alternative Shipping Method (MyOK Option):
    • If you prefer not to use the provided kit, you can opt to prepare your own DNA collection kit. Select the “Make Your Own Kit” option on the order form.
    • After completing your order, you’ll receive an email with a submission letter containing your unique Journey Genetic Testing case number and the laboratory’s mailing address.
    • Collect your samples as described above, ensuring they are properly labeled and dried.
    • Send the samples to the provided address using a secure shipping method or, for U.S.A. residents, print the return label provided to you by email.

4. Shipping Considerations:

  • Timing: Aim to send your samples to the laboratory promptly after collection to maintain their integrity.
  • Tracking: Use a shipping method that provides tracking information to confirm the laboratory’s receipt of your samples.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your DNA samples are returned to the laboratory correctly, facilitating accurate and timely test results.
